This installation resulted from my “Artist in Residency” at Queens College, Charlotte, North Carolina. I conducted a workshop in which participants brought their dryer lint to supplement what I had brought to contribute. A birthday party theme was selected for a buffet dinner and small groups were formed to concoct lint food. With surprisingly little supervision, the meal was designed and sculpted with plenty of variety on the menu. Photos of the food were added to a scrapbook of old recipes with lint overlays The installation at the Watkins Gallery included the food table, accompanied by other dishes, placed throughout the room as if partygoers had filled their plates at the buffet, then left in a hurry. The area around the installation was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape, compounding the mystery for the quick exodus. In completing my residency at the two schools of Queens College, I gave both a daytime informal classroom lecture and a comprehensive slide lecture the evening the exhibition opened. Slater Barron |
