Begun in 1983, this group of portraits documents the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s Disease on my mother from the time she had to be cared for in a sanitarium until her death in 1990. In very poor health when she entered nursing home, loving care and diet supplements brought back some of her beauty and personality. As the disease progressed, she began a ritual of endlessly walking the halls and grounds. In the final stages of the disease she was bedridden and close to death. In the final pictures the decimated frog that comes to her bedside symbolizes the Angel of Death. Slater Barron |
